How to Clean Your Windows After a Dust Storm or Heavy Rain

Dust storms and heavy rain can make your windows very dirty. They leave behind spots, mud, and dust that block sunlight and make your home look messy. If you clean your windows soon after a storm, they will stay clear and last longer. Here is an easy guide to help you clean your windows the right way.

Step 1: Look at Your Windows

Before you clean, take a look at the windows. See how much dirt is on them. Check for mud, water spots, or dust. Also, look for cracks or damage. If the glass is broken, do not clean it until it is fixed.

Step 2: Get Your Tools Ready

You don’t need fancy tools. These will work fine:

  • A bucket with warm water

  • A few drops of dish soap

  • A sponge or soft cloth

  • A squeegee (if you have one)

  • A dry cloth or towel

  • A soft broom or brush (for dry dirt)

Step 3: Remove Loose Dirt First

Use a dry cloth or soft brush to wipe off the dust. This step is important. If you skip it, the dirt can scratch the glass when you wash it.

Step 4: Wash the Glass

Now it’s time to clean. Mix a little dish soap into warm water. Dip your cloth or sponge in the soapy water. Wipe the window gently. If the dirt is stuck, wait a few seconds and then try again.

You can also mix vinegar and water if you want a natural cleaner. Use half vinegar and half water.

Step 5: Rinse the Window

Use clean water to rinse the glass. This removes soap and dirt. If you're cleaning outside windows, a garden hose works great. Just don’t use strong pressure—gentle is best.

Step 6: Dry the Glass

Use a squeegee to pull the water down the window. Start at the top and go down in straight lines. Wipe the blade after each swipe. If you don’t have a squeegee, a dry microfiber cloth works too. Make sure the glass is dry to stop water spots.

Step 7: Clean the Frame and Bottom Edge

The frame and sill also get dirty. Wipe them with a damp cloth. Then dry them well so mold does not grow.

Step 8: Keep It Cleaner for Longer

You can use a glass protectant spray to keep water and dirt from sticking. Also, clean your windows often, so storms don’t leave heavy buildup.

Final Tip

Clean your windows after each storm if you can. It helps keep your home bright and your windows in good shape.
